World No.44 Sorana Cirstea has upset world No.4 Karolina Pliskova 6-1 7-5 in the third round of the China Open.
Cirstea was aggressive from the off, winning six games in a row in an incredible first set performance.
The second set was tighter, with Pliskova leading on multiple occasions. Indeed, the Czech twice served for the chance to take the match into a decider, but Cirstea captialised on some uncharacteristic problems with the Pliskova serve (six double faults), roaring back from 5-2 down to take the match 6-1 7-5 in 83 minutes.
The win represents another step back towards the top for Cirstea, a former world No.21. Pliskova, however, may rue a missed opportunity, as the Czech had the chance to return to the top of the WTA depending on results at this tournament.
Cirstea will play French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko in the quarterfinals.
