Former champions Caroline Garcia, Garbine Muguruza, Caroline Wozniacki and Marcos Baghdatis took part in a special opening ceremony at Diamond Court tonight to mark the China Open’s 15th anniversary.
Each champion shared why the event was special to them, with Wozniacki recalling her rise to world No.1 for the first time when she won the 2010 event and Baghdatis sharing his happy memories of claiming a first career title here in 2006.
The ceremony also included a moving choir performance. The Dandelion School, Beijing No.18 High School and Taipei Big Future Foundation choirs warmly leading a rendition of ‘Welcome to Beijing’. The song holds special significance in the city, as it was used in the countdown to the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008.
Tournament officials spoke proudly about the event’s growth and their ongoing focus to improvement as they officially declared the 2018 event open.
The ceremony preceded the first evening session of the tournament, headlined by 12th seed Jelena Ostapenko. The French Open 2017 champion made a winning start to her campaign, defeating Slovakian Magdalena Rybarikova in straight sets.
