R: You were broken three times in the first set but you still won at last. Was it because that you were confident and that Elena’s too eager to win?
D: She doesn’t have the best serves but she returns very well. That’s why it was tough to hold your serve games when you play against her. At the end of the first set I just told myself to stay positive even though I was broken. She’s a great player and I’m happy that I played well.
R: There are many arguments about female tennis players’ depth after your return because you just gave birth and quickly won the title. Could you please talk about that?
D: I just get better every year. In the past, there were only 2-3 girls who performed well in the tournaments. Now there are handful girls who are famous in the Grand Slams. In the current tennis field, girls in Top 30-40 play as well as the girls in Top 20-30 in the past. I’m excited to come back and I’m happy that I play well. I really don’t know how I will reflect on women’s games.
R: Lorina Morariu just said goodbye to tennis. You both had fantastic memories together. Please talk about that.
D: For the past five years, we’ve been good friends and we’ve shared happy memories. She’s been excited to end her chapter of tennis and started her new life. She’s like a sister to me. She’s happy now and I’m happy for her. I will definitely miss her because I decided to come back and she decided to stop.
R: You just travel from Bali to Beijing for tournaments. But you don’t seem exhausted at all.
D: I’ m a little tired but there’s no question of my body. Three months ago I began to practice 2-3 hours a day and for the last 12 days I’ve been most healthy. It’s tough to come back day after day. I just keep doing my work and stay in my stamina. It’s really fun and so far nothing bothers me.
R: I noticed that you applied for WTA’s special ranking before you gave birth to your son. Did you predict that you would return to the court at that moment? With such great successes, do you think you will return to Top 100 at the end of this season?
D: I did have my special ranking applied in March. At that time I didn’t think I would use it. As for Top 100, I will try to go and defeat, but I don’t think that’ll happen.
R: You just said you applied for special ranking. When exactly did you decide to come back?
D: A few days before I applied for the special ranking, I had a conversation with my agent. We thought that it was nothing to lose for just filling out some paper works. When I was pregnant all my focus was on the baby. It was like a whole change of life. But when it got closer to birth, you just started to think about the other things after the baby was out.
R: When did you decide to play in Bali and Beijing? Was it before the tournament in New Haven?
D: It was just six weeks after the birth. I decided to play in doubles. The week after that I thought I would have enough time to prepare for matches in Bali. Seven weeks was enough for me to focus on practicing and not to be distracted. I had good memory last year in Beijing and I decided to come here again after the matches in Bali.
