China Open Day 5: Yuan secures her first victory, Medvedev smoothly advances to the next round

The fifth day of the 2023 China Open was marked by intense matches in men’s and women’s singles, as well as doubles. The competition was fierce and filled with exciting moments.

In the second round of the men’s singles, No.2 seed Daniil Medvedev overcame Alex de Minaur 7-6(3) 6-3, who defeated Andy Murray in the first round. No.6 seed Andrey Rublev missed the opportunity to serve for the match at 5-3 in the final set and was upset by French Ugo Humbert 7-5 3-6 6-7(3), failing to compete with Medvedev in the quarterfinals.

Chilean Nicolas Jarry, who caused an upset by downing Stefanos Tsitsipas on Friday, staged a comeback to beat Italian Matteo Arnaldi 6-7(4) 7-6(4) 6-3. He will face Alexander Zverev in the next round, who recovered from losing an opening-set tie-break to win Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6-7(4), 6-2, 6-1 in a late-night match.

In the women’s singles, Yuan Yue made her debut at the China Open and came back from a set down to defeat Belgian Elise Mertens 3-6 6-1 6-4, which marked her first victory at the China Open as well as her first-ever win at WTA 1000 level.

In other matches, Tatjana Maria defeated Martina Trevisan 6-3 7-6(2). Varvara Gracheva downed Anastasia Potapova 6-2 3-6 6-1. Anna Blinkova powered past Donna Vekic 6-3 7-5. Marta Kostyuk overcame Elisabetta Cocciaretto 1-6 6-3 6-4, and Petra Martic defeated Sorana Cirstea 6-2 2-6 7-6(3).

In the women’s singles qualifying, Katie Boulter swept Kamilla Rakhimova 6-1 6-1. Yulia Putintseva downed Elina Avanesyan 6-1 6-4. Ashlyn Krueger narrowly defeated Lucia Bronzetti 6-4 5-7 6-4. Eva Lys beated Cristina Bucsa 6-2 6-1. Mirra Andreeva received a retirement gift from Anna Kalinskaya when leading 6-0 3-1, and Claire Liu withdrew from the match, allowing Magdalena Frech to advance directly to the main draw.

In the only women’s doubles match, No.6 seed, China’s cross-Strait team of Wang Xinyu and Hsieh Su-Wei were defeated by Sara Sorribes Tormo and Marie Bouzkova 2-6 7-6(3) 3-10.

In the men’s doubles, No.1 seed Ivan Dodig and Austin Krajicek swept Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz. No.4 seed Santiago Gonzalez and Edouard Roger-Vasselin downed Tomas Martin Etcheverry and Nicolas Jarry 6-2 6-2. Jannik Sinner and Alex de Minaur were defeated by Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos 6-7(2) 3-6. Hugo Nys and Jan Zielinski overcame Sander Gille and Joran Vliegen 7-6(5) 6-4.
