Preview of Day 7: Zheng competes against Rybakina on Super Monday

Super Monday is coming to the 2023 China Open today.

Carlos Alcaraz, who played the first two rounds on the Diamond Court, will face his opponent, the three-time Grand Slam runner-up, Casper Ruud, on the Lotus Court. Alcaraz once defeated Ruud in both their first Masters and Grand Slam finals.

Daniil Medvedev, the second seed, will appear on the first match of the Diamond Court, facing French Ugo Humbert, who caused an upset in the previous round by defeating Andrey Rublev. Humbert has a perfect record against Medvedev in their previous two encounters. Will Humbert continue his winning streak or will Medvedev succeed in seeking revenge?

If Medvedev wins, his semi-final opponent will be the winner of Alexander Zverev and Nicolas Jarry, which will be played on the second court of the Diamond Court.

No.6 seed, Jannik Sinner, will conclude the night session on the Diamond Court, facing former world No.3 Grigor Dimitrov, who beat the third seed, Holger Rune, in the second round.

In the women’s singles, the highly anticipated match will be between Zheng Qinwen, who just won a gold medal at the Hangzhou Asian Games, and Elena Rybakina, the 2022 Wimbledon champion. This match will take place as the opening match of the night session on the Diamond Court.
Despite facing a strong opponent in her first match at the China Open, Zheng Qinwen remains calm. “In the first round, people are slowly getting into their rhythm. People are working through their game in the first and second round. It will be tough for both of us,” Zheng said.

The other two Chinese players will also make their singles debut at this year’s China Open. Zhu Lin will face Lesia Tsurenko on the Lotus Court, and Wang Xinyu will go against Vera Zvonareva on the Moon Court.

Yuan Yue, who recently achieved her first-ever win at WTA 1000 level, will face Jasmine Paolini in the second round. Guo Hanyu and Jiang Xinyu, who reached the final in Guangzhou and Ningbo in the past two weeks, will have their first-round doubles match.

Two superstars born in the 2000s, French Open champion Iga Swiatek and US Open champion Coco Gauff, will make their debut at the China Open on Super Monday. Swiatek will play against Sara Sorribes Tormo as the second match on the Lotus Court, while Gauff will face Ekaterina Alexandrova as the third match on the Diamond Court. Ons Jabeur, who just won a champion in Ningbo, will face Ashlyn Krueger in the first round.
