No. 9 seed Daria Kasatkina defeated lucky loser Jana Fett of Croatia 6-1, 6-2 in the second round of the China Open on Saturday. Kasatkina, who is fifth on the WTA Tour this season with 34 wins, broke Fett seven times in the 1:15 match.
Kasatkina defined the pace of every rally during the opening set, breaking Fett four times, helped by five double faults. Kasatkina controlled the pace with powerful forehands, forcing several errors from Fett.
It seemed this trend would continue in the second set as Kasatkina won the first three games, breaking Fett’s serve once again in the second game. In the fourth game, the momentum seemed to shift as Fett won every point, putting pressure on Kasatkina for the first time in the match. Fett controlled rallies and ran Kasatkina around the court. However, it was too little too late as Kasatkina regained her composure and handily wrapped up the second set to take the match.
Kasatkina advances to play World No. 43 Amanda Anisimova in their fifth meeting. Anisimova leads Kasatkina 4-0, having won their previous four on hard courts.
