18-year-old Andreeva rolls past Bouzas Maneiro into Round of 16

No. 4 seed Mirra Andreeva took care of business with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Jessica Bouzas Maneiro on Monday, Sept. 29, to reach the Round of 16 at the 2025 China Open.

Andreeva, ranked No. 5 in the world, is enjoying the best season of her young career with 39 wins, including two WTA tournament titles and two Grand Slam quarterfinal appearances. This is her first tournament since reaching the third round of the U.S. Open and her third China Open appearance. She will look to make her second straight quarterfinal after falling to Qinwen Zheng last year.

“I’m trying to work on myself everyday and improve,” she said earlier in the tournament. “I can say that I’ve improved a lot compared to the beginning of the year.”

Bouzas Maneiro, ranked No. 48, played aggressively, breaking serve in the third game with a powerful backhand winner for a 2-1 lead. Andreeva immediately broke back, and the two held serve until Andreeva went up 5-4. She then broke to love, aided by a backhand error and double fault from Bouzas Maneiro, to take the first set.

The second set began with a 14-point game that Andreeva held before Bouzas Maneiro held serve to even it 1-1. From there, Andreeva took control, winning five straight games. She punctuated the run with an 18-point battle in the sixth game for her third break of the set and closed out the match in 1 hour, 32 minutes.

Andreeva will face No. 81 Sonay Kartal of Great Britain in the Round of 16. Kartal has not dropped more than three games in a set through her first three matches in Beijing. The two have never met.

Potapova defeats Sonmez in Round 3

Anastasia Potapova advanced and will play No 26. seed Linda Noskova in the Round of 16 of the 2025 China Open after defeating Zeynep Sonmez 6-3, 7-5 in the Round 3 on the Moon Court.

In the first set, Potapova’s relentless serves made it difficult for Sonmez. Potapova took a swift lead 3-0, breaking serve when her opponent repeatedly double faulted. She later broke serve again and built an insurmountable 5-2 lead.

The second set was a tighter affair. With the score 2-2, Potapova broke serve at love with fast corner shots, but Sonmez later broke back, charging the net multiple times to send the ball deep to tie the score at 5-5. Sonmez’s serving troubles returned in the 11th game as double faults crept into her game to allow Potapova to break serve and take the match.

Noskova of Czechia previously defeated World No. 1 Iga Swiatek in last year’s Australian Open to reach the quarterfinals. She also won the 2024 Monterrey Open. Noskova and Potapova have split their two prior meetings.
