China Open Day 1: Exciting open day ends with thrilling qualifying matches

The first day of the 2023 China Open came to a close with a series of remarkable matches. Seven men’s singles qualifying matches and two men’s doubles qualifying matches saw winners emerging.

After winning the first set 6-4, Li Hanwen, the Chinese rising star born in 2002, was unable to maintain his momentum. Max Purcell fought back strongly, winning the next two sets 6-1, 6-2. Bai Yan, the 34-year-old Chinese veteran, faced American J.J.Wolf. Despite a valiant effort, Bai fell short, losing a close match with a score of 6-7(5), 3-6.

Two marathon battles captivated the audience as 22-year-old Italian rising star Matteo Arnaldi defeated Colombian Daniel Elahi Galan 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(12) in an intense 2 hours and 54 minutes. Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic emerged triumphant 7-5 6-7(5) 6-1 after 2 hours and 42 minutes.

German Yannick Hanfmann upset Dusan Lajovic 6-3, 7-6(7). This win not only marked Hanfmann’s second consecutive victory over Lajovic but also ended his five-match losing streak in singles. South African Lloyd Harris, playing with a protected ranking, eased past the 2023 Madrid Masters quarterfinalist Daniel Altmaier 6-3, 6-1. Australian Aleksandar Vukic defeated Brandon Nakashima 6-4, 6-4.

In the doubles matches, two Chinese pairs failed to advance to the next round. Li Zhe and Li Hanwen were overcome by the Austrian pair, Alexander Erler and Lucas Miedler 3-6 2-6. Gao Xin and Sun Qian were defeated by Anirudh Chandrasekar and Sundar Prashanth 2-6, 3-6.
