China's most beloved basketball idol made a surprise appearance at a group wedding of eight organized by the China Life.

The seven-foot-tall giant is also the ambassador for the insurance company. The couples tied the knot before an audience of about a thousand people, mostly staff members of China Life, at Court 1 at the 2011 China Open.

The event began with a stunning woodwind and strings performance by a band of seven women, accompanied by dancers dressed in cheerleading costumes. Following the first performance was a song and break-dance performed by a local boy band, 0086 Boys Team.

All eight couples that came from eight different cities were brought together that day by tennis, through China Life. Each couple had some tennis history linked to their love story at some point of their relationship.

Yao stole the show with his surprise appearance while the couples were exchanging their vows on stage. He then wished them a happy marriage and even slipped in a small joke about China Life.

"May all of you have a happy marriage and stay together forever; and may China Life be prosperous in their business," he joked.

He handed the couples an insurance card each and an autographed giant tennis ball as well as souvenirs from the China Open, Xiao Mei and Da Li.

The ceremony ended with a duet for the newly weds sung by two women with angelic child-like voice. The girls had identical outfits and blonde wigs sang the closing song to wish the lovebirds a love-filled marriage.
